ATLANTA – For over a month, the Dodgers navigated their schedule with just four starting pitchers, pitching an enclosure game when needed, immediately replacing Dustin May with a conventional starter. Instead, they chose to wait for Tony Gonsolin to recover from his shoulder injury.

Well, Gonsolin is ready and the reliever playing days, at least for now, seem like a fix of the past. Manager Dave Roberts has said Gonsolin will start on Wednesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. It will be Gonsolin’s first game in the major leagues this season. The right-hander was put on the injured list on April 4 before appearing in a game.

Gonsolin, 27, completed a three-start rehab assignment with the Oklahoma City triple-A on Thursday. A stomach bug limited him to 60 throws in 3 2/3 innings, but he came out otherwise healthy. He joined the Dodgers in Georgia on Friday.

Gonsolin allowed four runs on six hits in 10 1/3 innings in his three outings in the minors. Roberts said he will be limited to four innings or 70 shots on Wednesday.

Gonsolin delivered an outstanding rookie season in 2020, posting a 2.31 ERA in 46 2/3 innings in nine games (eight starts). He will now serve as the Dodgers’ fifth starter, completing a rotation that has been the best in the majors this season.

Graterol progresses

Brusdar Graterol also pitched for Oklahoma City on Thursday. The right-handed reliever struck the side in the seventh inning on the second outing of his rehabilitation mission.

Graterol has been on the injured list since April 29 with tightness in his forearm.

Seager is still not getting full swing

Corey Seager joined the Dodgers on their road trip as he continues to rehabilitate his fractured right hand. Roberts said the shortstop, who broke his hand on May 15, has yet to start taking two-handed punches.

“He played wrestling, stretching it up to 90 feet, maybe up to 120,” Roberts said. “So just keeping his arm moving.” So the progression every day has improved a lot and for us having him around us is positive. “
