The company behind an impressive model railway set in the woods of Flintshire hopes to encourage the younger generation to join the nostalgic hobby.

The Celyn Wood Miniature Railway in Northop has a wooded track that is about a third of a mile passing patches of bluebells, garlic and beautiful wildflowers.

The railway has been in operation for around 35 years and is open to the public from 11am to 3pm most Sundays of the year depending on the weather.

The attraction is free on Sundays and, at just £1 for a train journey, offers an affordable day out for families.

The railway will close from October 30 to April 2 next year to allow for essential maintenance work.

The railroad is operated, maintained, and even managed by the Mold Engineering Society, which has about 50 members with a passion for railroad engineering and model making.

The works that will take place this winter include; track replacement, lawn mower deck replacement, tidying up and clean up as well as dealing with a current outbreak of an invasive plant.

The railway is a completely self-sustaining non-profit organization that relies solely on Sunday commuter revenue to keep the track running.

The railway really looks like an old fashioned train station and track in a scaled down size and several toys and animals can be spotted along the route.

There is space available for patrons to picnic on site and watch a smaller railway which contains several model tank engines, including an infamous Thomas.

The company offers birthday parties on a limited basis of six parties a year at a cost of £100 for two hours of unlimited rides.

The Mold Engineering Society consists mainly of those over retirement age, so they hope to encourage model train and model engineering enthusiasts to join us.

Group secretary Paul Wilbraham said: “We need young people.

“It’s easier for us because we remember what steam trains and diesel trains used to look like, whereas for younger kids it might not be.”

Group president Dave Eldridge said, “It’s a nostalgia-driven hobby.”

The railway’s impressive locomotives are either built or owned by members of the company.

According to Mr. Wilbraham, who has built several trains, the complete construction of a train can take around four years and requires a lot of patience.

Society members are immensely proud and passionate about the enchanting world they have built.

Mr Wilbraham added: “It really is a labor of love.”
