Online Pet Retailer soft is looking to move its national headquarters, which will house 500 new employees, to Broward County, Commercial Observer has learned.
For its new base, the national distributor has selected Planting, Florida, a town on the edge of Broward County, near Everglades National Park. Last week the City Council of the plantation approved a tax rebate incentive program to attract an unidentified “national retailer”. The company is actually Chewy, according to sources familiar with the relocation plan.
The e-commerce company is seeking 221,597 square feet of space to house “all the executives in the C suite” and 500 new employees, whose annual salaries would average $ 100,000, according to documents filed by tThe Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance, which guides the potential movement. Chewy plans to spend $ 25 million to build their new space and purchase office equipment, by documents.
A spokesperson for the GFLA declined to disclose the identity of the company “due to a confidentiality agreement.” The general manager of the municipal council of the plantation, Jason nunemaker, also declined to name the company.
The obstacles to complete the movement remain. The online pet store has yet to sign a new lease in South Florida, another source familiar with the relocation plans said. the Broward County Commission must still authorize the package.
Representatives for Chewy did not immediately respond to the comments.
Chewy is currently headquartered in the north of Boston and in Broward County in Dania Beach, or it’s leasing over 100,000 square feet at Design Center of the Americas office complex. It is not known if the company plans to close these sites and how many employees in total would be housed in the new headquarters.
Supermarket chain PetSmart acquired the online retailer for $ 3 billion in 2017.
As pet ownership grew in popularity during the pandemic, 2020 turned out to be a banner year for Chewy. In the last quarter of 2020, sales jumped to $ 2 billion, increasing 51% year-over-year. The pet retailer added 5.7 million customers, topping 2020 with more than 19 million active users, the South Florida Business Journal reported.
Chewy is booming across the country. It plans to open a headquarters in Seattle by the end of the year, GeekWire reported. It has 942 vacancies on its website.
Other tech companies have made Plantation their home, such as the augmented reality device company Magic jump.
