Senegal vs Cape Verde: welcome
Good morning! Welcome to our live coverage of Round of 16 of today’s CAN between Senegal and Cape Verde. Kick-off is less than an hour away at the Kouekong stadium with a capacity of 20,000 seats, located about 15 km from the town of Bafoussam, in western Cameroon.
Competing in their 16th AFCON final, 2019 finalists Senegal topped Group B to reach the round of 16 but didn’t really serve any tricks on the edge of the siege. Aliou Cissé’s men managed just one goal on their way to a win and two draws: a 97th-minute penalty from Sadio Mané in their opener against Zimbabwe.
As for Cape Verde, which is only taking part in the tournament for the third time, their four points in Group A were enough to qualify them for the round of 16 – and only the second AFCON knockout game in their history – as one of the best third-placed teams.
A total of two in their goal column means so far Pedro Brito’s men haven’t been clean scorers either. Combined with Senegal’s combination of goal-shyness and defensive nastiness – they’re the only AFCON 2021 team yet to cash in – it’s rather suggests that we may not have trouble counting today.
I really hope I’m wrong about this, though!
