The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) received a national ranking of #3 for its online Doctor of Nursing Practice programs by OnlineU in the Resource Guide’s “Best Online DNP Degrees 2022”.

OnlineU rated online programs based on its Salary Score metric. Salary Score compares the earnings of graduates from one university to the earnings of online DNP graduates at other colleges across the country. The higher the Salary Score, the more alumni of a program have earned relative to others.

At #3, Southern Miss alumni earn well above the median and more than most online DNP graduates across the country (https://www.onlineu.com/degrees/dnp).

“This ranking is a testament to the work that faculty, staff and students put into our online DNP programs,” said Dr. LaWanda Baskin, director of the School of Leadership and Advanced Nursing Practice. “This proves that the University of Southern Mississippi administers competitive programs that are among the premier programs in the nation to prepare registered nurses for advanced practice.”

USM offers five online DNP programs based on students’ area of interest. The DNP Family Nurse Practitioner (BSN to DNP) program is hybrid, with students taking online courses and visiting campus once per semester, as well as clinical requirements at a local clinic.

At USM, online students take courses asynchronously or synchronously on the Canvas platform. Online students have access to a writing center, bookstore, student success center, and computer support. Each program has different requirements, although a bachelor’s or master’s degree, official transcripts, and a nursing license are generally required for a DNP program.

Baskin points out that USM has about 50 students currently enrolled in online DNP programs. Last year, 15 students graduated from the programs.

“Students should choose to enter this type of graduate nursing program because completion of the doctorate in nursing practice will soon be the standard level of education expected of advanced practice nurses across the country,” said Baskin said. “At the end of our program at USM, they will be well prepared to provide high-quality health care.”
