Virat Kohli rested but selectors keep World T20 door open

Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah have been rested for the upcoming T20I series against West Indies. Kuldeep Yadav will return to the Indian team after his finger injury. However, it is learned that the selection committee headed by Chetan Sharma will continue to support Kohli and he remains an integral part of the team plan for the T20 World Cup to be held in November.

India are currently playing England in an ODI series where they are leading 1-0. Kohli, who came out of the 1st ODI with a groin injury, will likely miss the second as well.

There has been a lot of fuss over Kohli’s form for a while now. He hasn’t touched a hundred in the past two years. Former legendary players like Kapil Dev have questioned his place in the team. Incidentally, Kapil had predicted the decline of Kohli the drummer at the start of 2020 itself; he had said that Kohli’s sight could be a factor in slowing reflexes and suggested that Kohli do special exercises to improve reflex and hand-eye coordination.

Breeders want to watch out for the injury lest it escalate into something more serious. Groin strains can easily escalate into a real tear if the player rushes into the thick of it. A quick single or a quick turnover during a double can unknowingly worsen a player’s condition if he enters the court not being one hundred percent fit.

Meanwhile, Kuldeep Yadav has recovered from his injury and completed his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. He suffered a finger injury when kicking into the net during India’s T20I series against South Africa at home.

The selection committee also gave Bumrah rest with workload management in mind. Bumrah has been playing cricket non-stop and with the Indian team to play a few more sets before the T20 World Cup, the coaches felt it was best to let him have a break.

The five-game T20I series against West Indies will kick off on July 29 and run until August 7. The first match will be played at Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad, followed by the other two matches, both of which will take place at Warner Park in St Kitts.

The series will conclude with the final two games to be played at Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Florida.

India have announced a 16-member squad for the three-match ODI West Indies series where Shikhar Dhawan will captain the team while Ravindra Jadeja will serve as his deputy. India will lock horns in three ODIs in Trinidad, which will start from July 22.

Indian stalwarts like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Bumrah, Rishabh Pant, Shami and Hardik Pandya were laid to rest. The team management have already stated their aim to get a good look at the strength of the bench in preparation for the T20 World Cup 2022 in October.

After their early exit from the UAE T20 World Cup, India tried up to 27 players in 16 T20Is, and 21 each in six ODIs and eight tests until the Edgbaston test.
